Innovation at the Medical Extreme: N = 1 Medical Case Study
Passion
Daniel has supported clients and businesses to sustain productivity, health and wellness, and enhance creative inquiry and expression for over forty years. He is passionate about people’s health, wellness, innovation and creative expression. He thrives on identifying less known, undervalued artistic, health, medical and science principles and facts, and then translating them into practical skills and tools to achieve a big payback for the average person. It is his style of health economics.
He brings a practical evidence and experiential based skill set to support clients to identify the blockages to productivity and creativity, and to implement ‘mind-body fitness’ practices to achieve their goals. This incorporates a broad and sophisticated anatomy and physiology model informed by the arts and sciences, integrative health, his professional work healthcare, and his broad study.
Independent Scholarship
Daniel's passion for his work, in part, is fueled by his own personal complex medical condition which began in his adolescence. The condition was intermittently disabling and took him to the edge of known medical knowledge. This spurred a profound inquiry into the mysteries and unknowns of medical science and human anatomy and physiology.
Out of necessity he studied broadly. The resulting synthesis of information is seen in the writing on these pages. He regularly receives comments that his synthesis and descriptions are uncommon.
From this personal experience he sees opportunities to scale these innovations to improve the health and wellness, productivity, and innovation of the broader population, as well as select communities, such as researchers in astrobiology and the origin of life.
Innovation at the Medical Extreme: N = 1 Medical Case Study
The Interogenesis skills and principles, and the Methods innovation, described on this website are the direct result of a life time exploration compelled by a complicated childhood medical condition of Daniel Lappin.
Daniel’s case is an example of inquiry, exploration, resilience, and recovery – at the extreme. The uncommon insights and proposals are a direct result of this N =1 case study,
Building upon multiple infections from age 8-10, the cascade of Daniel’s health condition spiked at age 16 with the occurrence of the first disabling episode. This symptoms of this episode suggested Mast Cell Activation Disorder. This episode apparently simultaneous triggered an escalated Epstein Barr infection. Hjis symptoms included significant swelling in his lymphatic nodes. A physician examination concluded that his spleen was near rupture.
At that time, Epstein Barr viral infections were not well understood.
Mast Cell Activation Disorder was not classified in the ICD (International Classification of Diseases) until 2017 (ICD 10) – approximately 40 years later. Daniel appeared to suffering from a medical condition that was not yet identified.
At a young age his future was determined – a life time of notable collapse and disability episodes.
An unusual aspect of this condition, is that the episode created symptoms that were intermittently disabling, but would resolve primarily upon the application of diligent psychophysiology inquiry and fitness skills, and dietary regimes.. Otherwise the impairment would remain for months.
These resilience and recovery principles and practices Daniel self discovered (Interogenesis) are a central basis for the refined anatomy and physiology model described in the ‘Methods Innovation’ and Interogenesis principles.
The result of Daniel’s medical condition was an intermittent state of:
Symptoms also suggested:
Over decades, Daniel consulted over 40 physicians and health professions to seek resolution of the difficult and intermittently disabling symptoms.
One physician described his condition as a form of an acquired brain Injury.
An MRI did not show signs of a stroke or a seizure.
In approximately 2018 a physician diagnosed:
Labs tests showed evidence of and suggested:
Prescription medications for Mast Cell stabilization provided significant improvement to the symptoms. A rigorous dietary and fitness regime also improved the symptoms.
Sleep Studies Hard Data
In 2022 and 2023, Daniel was administered two overnight Sleep Studies to gather brain and physiology data of his sleep cycle. A significant hard data point was established regarding the N3 sleep phase.
N3 sleep phase is deep, slow brain wave sleep. In the N3 sleep phase glial cells expand and contract, allowing the waste material in the brain to be flushed from the brain. The glial cell is the lymphatic cleansing system specific to the brain. This cleansing is part of the rest and rejuvenation cycle of the brain to support healthy sleep and to support cognition.
In the first sleep study the measure for N3 was significantly deficient. It was less than 10 % of the recommended percent of N3 sleep.
In consultation with the sleep physician and another consulting physician, Daniel utilized the Interogenesis physiology principles to assess his condition. He decided to significantly increase the dosage (600%) of the mast cell stabilizing drugs, and the over the counter detoxification nutrients and herbs, plus the timing of the medication and nutrients.
Approximately six months after the medication and nutritional increase, a second overnight study was conducted. The measure for N3 increased to approximately 50% of the recommended optimal amount. The consulting sleep physician label this increase as ‘impressive’.
According to the sleep physician Daniel’s mast cell medication and nutritional therapeutic intervention constituted a different category of remediation than is common in the field of sleep medicine.
After the medication and nutrient change, Daniels symptoms began to reduce notably, yet swings continued to occur. Over the course of the subsequent months, further modifications supported further reduction in the historic symptoms.
In consultation with the two physicians, the data from the sleep studies supports the conclusion that Daniel’s historic symptoms have been strongly influenced by his genetic polymorphisms. Daniel’s body does not easily process the normal load of toxins (oxidative stress, etc) that occur from daily digestive metabolism and physical function. Over his life cycle the daily process of eating and sleeping have been difficult and traumatic for Daniel.
The working conclusion is that the elevated levels of waste material in Daniel’s brain and body would trigger a mast cell degranulation (release of chemical mediators from the mast cell), specifically in his brain. The exact mechanisms that have been activated are unclear. The symptom reduction from the high doses of mast cell stabilizing drugs and detoxification nutrients suggest that a primary cause is mast cell degranulation triggering an immune reaction. Other possible explanations include some form of nervous system response to the elevated toxic load, which then caused vascular and capillary constriction in his brain, thus blocking blood flow and presenting as pseudo-stroke symptoms. This could also explain the notable right brain, left side constriction symptoms cascading from his face to his feet.
Extreme Condition – Extreme Resilience and Recovery
Over the decades, with scattered insight from physicians and health professions, out of necessity, Daniel relied deeply upon his own investigation into medical and health sciences, and upon his personal ability to recover from the intermittently disabling symptoms.
This is the foundation for the innovations labeled as Interogenesis, and a foundation for the methods innovation.
Daniel innovated:
Going Forward This medical condition took Daniel to the edge, the extreme. It has become his life work. Integrating his work with private clients, Daniel sees an opportunity to scale these insights and innovations for public health benefits, innovation and discovery, and general productivity.
